Note: Part of this was originally going to drop next week in Bills, Takes and Dad Mistakes on Joe from Queens. But after John Wawrow’s tweet, I figured, screw it. Why wait? Let’s put it out there now.
Well, here we go again.
John “Rock-N-Wawrow” of the Associated Press reported Thursday that Bills GM Brandon Beane is as aggressive as ever heading into Tuesday’s November 10 trade deadline and will more than likely target defense. With limited cap space available, Beane said he’d “probably” use it to acquire a defensive player.
First off, that’s great. The Bills need defensive help, and I’m happy to hear Beane is looking to do something about it.
Here’s the part I find a little strange.
Why would you publicly announce that you’re going to be aggressive and that you’re specifically looking for a defensive player?
Put yourself in another GM’s shoes. You know the Bills need help defensively. You know Beane has limited cap space. And now he’s publicly telling everyone he’s aggressively looking for someone. Wouldn’t that potentially drive up the asking price?
If I’m another GM and Brandon Beane calls me, why wouldn’t I try to squeeze a little more out of him? He’s basically telling every GM in the league that he’s shopping. And furthermore, now he almost HAS to make a deal because he’s publicly put it out there. If he comes away empty-handed, the backlash is going to be ridiculous. And let’s face it, Brandon Beane’s approval rating in Buffalo these days is probably hovering somewhere around Donald Trump’s. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement.
Maybe I’m completely wrong about this. Maybe I’m just a cynical bastard. Maybe all these GMs already know what everyone else needs, and I’m making something out of nothing. But I don’t necessarily understand the strategy of announcing your intentions several days before the deadline.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. We’ve heard Beane talk like this before. Quite a few times, actually.
I went back and found some of his actual comments made before previous trade deadlines. Not the explanations afterward. What he was telling people when there was still time to make a move. And when you start looking through them, there’s a pretty familiar pattern.
Go back to October 27, 2017, just a few days before the October 31 deadline.
Beane said, “We’re always looking to improve the Bills.”
He also explained that if an opportunity presented itself before Tuesday that could help Buffalo win immediately, he’d pursue it. And to his credit, he did. The Bills acquired Kelvin Benjamin from Carolina on deadline day. Of course, we all know how that worked out. But he made a move, and at the time it certainly looked like Buffalo was trying to improve its offense.

Fast-forward to October 16, 2024, when Beane appeared on The Pat McAfee Show following the acquisition of Amari Cooper from Cleveland.
Beane declared, “We’re still all in.”
He explained that Buffalo would continue monitoring the market and potentially add another player if it found someone who could help put the team over the top. Remember, this was nearly three weeks before the deadline. Beane wasn’t ruling out another addition, and he certainly wanted everyone to know that Buffalo was still looking to improve.

Then, on October 31, 2024, Beane appeared on Ross Tucker’s podcast and delivered a couple of quotes that sound awfully familiar today.
“I’ve got to look under every rock,” Beane said while discussing potential acquisitions. He also added, “But we’re still going to swing for the fence.”
Does any of this sound familiar?
Beane explained that any potential acquisition would need to fit the Bills’ offensive or defensive scheme, satisfy the other team’s asking price, and work within Buffalo’s tight salary cap. In other words, he was willing to make the calls, but he acknowledged that the chances of everything lining up weren’t particularly high. And what happened? Buffalo didn’t make another trade before the deadline.
Now, he’d already acquired Cooper, so I’m not going to pretend he did absolutely nothing. But he certainly left the door open for another move that never materialized. It’s also interesting that the salary cap was part of the conversation then, just as it is today.

And here’s something else interesting. Earlier this week, on November 3, 2026, ESPN published an article about why NFL trades have become more common.
Beane was among the general managers interviewed, and he said, “We’re going to make trades.”
He was discussing how the newer generation of NFL general managers has become more willing to make deals and how creative pick swaps have helped facilitate trades.
Now, this wasn’t Beane specifically promising that the Bills would acquire somebody before Tuesday’s deadline. But it does give you an idea of how he views today’s trade market. He’s clearly comfortable with the idea of making deals, and he wants people to know that.

And then there’s 2025, when the Bills made no trade deadline deals despite needing help. Afterward, Beane explained that Buffalo had explored several moves but couldn’t find a willing partner. That’s certainly possible, and I don’t doubt that he was making calls. But at the end of the day, the Bills didn’t add anybody.
So it’s not like Beane never follows through. That’s not what I’m saying. But there’s a history here of him talking about looking for deals, talking about being aggressive, and ultimately having very mixed results. Sometimes he delivers, sometimes he doesn’t, and sometimes the player he acquires doesn’t make nearly the difference everyone hoped.
And when nothing happens, we often hear about how difficult it is to make trades, how the cap prevents certain moves, or how another team wasn’t willing to cooperate. All of those things can be true. I’m not suggesting Beane can force another GM to pick up the phone and give him a player. But after hearing versions of this for years, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want something more than another explanation about why a deal couldn’t get done.
But what does being aggressive actually mean in 2026?
Does it mean acquiring another depth player who might play 15 snaps a game? Does it mean giving up a late-round pick for somebody else’s expendable veteran? Or does it mean actually acquiring a defensive player who can make a significant difference when the Bills get to January? Because there’s a big difference between adding somebody just to say you made a trade and bringing in a player who can actually change what this defense is capable of doing.
I’m not asking him to throw away first-round picks just so we can all feel good about winning the trade deadline. But I also understand that Josh Allen is 30 years old. He’s been carrying this franchise for years, and there’s only so much time you get with a quarterback of his caliber. At some point, the organization needs to stop talking about getting over the hump and actually do something that helps get them there.
I like that Beane recognizes the defense needs help. I like that he’s looking for a player on that side of the ball. I’m even happy he went on the record. But I also think it’s fair to be skeptical when you’ve been hearing variations of the same thing for nearly a decade.
There’s a difference between being aggressive on the telephone and being aggressive when it comes time to make a deal.
We’ve heard the quotes before. Now let’s see the trade. And please, Brandon, make it someone who actually helps this football team win in January.
